Car accidents and delayed injury symptoms

If you are part of a car accident, you may expect to immediately experience the symptoms of an injury. While this can hold true, such as in the event of a broken bone, here's something to remember: Delayed injury symptoms are possible.

Here are some symptoms that could come into play several hours (or longer) after a crash:

  • Headaches. It's not uncommon to develop a headache several days after an accident, which may signal a potentially serious injury, such as a concussion.
  • Neck, back or shoulder pain. This is typically associated with whiplash.
  • Numbness. Another symptom of whiplash, this is something you may feel in your arms, legs, hands or feet.
  • Changes in physical function. As the days go by, you may find it difficult to function as you would like. For instance, you could have trouble with movement and memory, both of which are a sign of a concussion or other form of brain injury.
  • Post traumatic stress disorder. Depending on the type of accident, you may suffer with this mental disorder, making it difficult to live your day-to-day life.

As you can see, a car accident doesn't always result in injury symptoms right away. It's possible that these could remain dormant for several hours or days, but eventually come into play.

This is why it's so important to receive medical care after a motor vehicle accident. Even if you feel okay, you'll want to consult with an experienced medical professional who can run the proper tests. This will give you a clear idea of your injuries, how to treat them and what to do in regards to seeking compensation.
