What’s the best way to drive in foggy conditions?

The best way to avoid trouble on the road in foggy conditions is to stay at home. This way, you're never taking a risk with your safety.

If this isn't possible, maybe because you have to drive to work or school, there are some tips you can follow when you're behind the wheel:

  • Leave yourself more time to reach your destination
  • Slow down
  • Use your headlights to increase visibility and improve the chance that other drivers will see you
  • Leave more space between your vehicle and others on the road
  • Don't use your high beams, as the glare can make it more difficult to see
  • Experiment with using fog lights to see if it makes a difference
  • If the fog is too heavy to safely navigate the road, pull into a parking lot

These aren't the only things you can do to drive safely in foggy conditions, but each and every one of these tips is meant to decrease the likelihood of an accident.

As you follow these tips in an attempt to remain safe, don't be surprised if you find that other drivers don't take as much caution. For example, rather than slow down, they continue to drive at a high rate of speed.

If you are part of an accident in foggy conditions, move your car as far off the road as possible. Due to the low visibility, you don't want to risk being part of a follow-up accident.

Once you receive medical treatment, you can review the police report, learn more about the accident and take action in regards to receiving compensation for your injuries and damages.
