Tailgating while driving: A serious problem

Drivers can make a variety of mistakes on the road, many of which increase the chance of an accident.

Tailgating is one such mistake, as this occurs when a person drives too close to the car in front of theirs. This may not sound like a big deal, but there are many reasons why it's an extremely dangerous behavior.

First things first, you should realize that there is never a good time to tailgate another vehicle. Even if you're in a hurry, it's best to keep a safe distance at all times. You're not doing yourself any good by driving closer, as it doesn't necessarily speed the other person up.

Conversely, if you are being tailgated, you need to know what steps to take. The best thing you can do is move out of the way and let the car through. Yes, this can be an inconvenience, but it's better than putting your safety at risk.

If you're unable to move out of the way, continue to drive the speed limit until the person has a chance to pass you.

The primary issue with tailgating is a lack of stopping distance. For example, if someone is following you too closely and you need to brake in a hurry, it could lead to a rear-end collision.

If your vehicle is struck from behind, pull to safety and call for help. This type of accident can result in many injuries, so you need to receive immediate medical attention.

Once you understand your injuries and assess what went wrong, consider your legal rights and how to proceed.
