Coping with grief after the loss of a loved one

Many things can happen when you learn that a loved one was killed in a tragic accident. One of these is that you might need to deal with a grieving process that can be very difficult. You should remember that no two people are going to handle grief in the same way. Some well-meaning people might try to make it seem like their way to work through your emotions is the only way or the best one.

When you're going through the motions in the days after the tragedy, the first thing that you need to do is to actually face all your emotions. Trying to ignore the way you feel is only going to make those feelings more intense as they fester.

You will likely have to go through the funeral or memorial for your family member. During this time, try to remember the good times with the person. Relish the memories that others share with you. This might help you in the process. You might also find that some of the people who are there can help you as you move through the healing process.

The range of emotions that you will feel can include everything from sadness and anger to acceptance. You should make sure that you are making decisions that are emotionally and mentally healthy. For example, when you are angry about the situation, don't take it out on those around you and don't physically attack the person who caused the accident. Instead, take the case to court by initiating a wrongful death claim. This can hold the person accountable and might give you closure.
