Steps to take if you spot a drunk driver

Regardless of the time of day or location, it’s possible you could encounter a drunk driver on the road. While you hope this never happens, drinking and driving remains a big problem throughout the country.

If you find yourself on the road and have reason to believe that another driver is drunk, there are a few things you need to do.

First off, keep your distance. If the person has been drinking, he or she may not have full control of his or her vehicle. As a result, there is a greater chance of him or her causing an accident.

Secondly, don’t hesitate to call 911. You may struggle with this thought at first, wondering if it’s your place to step in and take action. Even if the person isn’t drunk, you did what you thought was best from a safety perspective.

By calling for help, there’s a chance you could have a drunk driver removed from the road before he or she causes a crash that injures or kills you or someone else.

Even with police on the lookout for drunk drivers, there is no way to completely put a stop to this crime. For this reason, you should always keep your eyes open as well.

If you’re ever part of an accident with a drunk driver, don’t hesitate to call police and receive medical treatment. Now’s not the time for you to take matters into your own hands. Police can do that once they arrive at the scene.

Once you receive treatment and have a firm grasp of your health situation, you can then learn more about the accident and how to hold the negligent party responsible for your injuries and other damages.
